What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They allow you to live the way you want to – confidently eating, smiling, laughing, talking, kissing and enjoying all of your everyday activities without worrying about your teeth*.

Think of dental implants as artificial tooth roots, similar in shape to screws. When dental implants are placed in your jawbone (A), they bond with your natural bone. They become a sturdy base for supporting one or more artificial teeth, called crowns.

A connector – known as an abutment (B) – is placed on top of the dental implant to hold and support your crowns. The crowns are custom-made to match your natural teeth and fit your mouth (C).

Modern dental implants have been used successfully for over 30 years. They are the strongest devices available to support replacement teeth – and even better, they allow these new teeth to feel, look and function naturally.

Who can benefit?

Dental implants can be a smart choice for adults of all ages, whether you were born without a tooth or have had to have teeth removed due to injury, infection or decay.

The number one thing that we hear from all of our patients is that dental implants have been life-changing.

They are no longer embarrassed, they have the confidence to smile around their loved ones and co-workers and they can eat what they want.

Imagine not having to hide your teeth or wear a denture that doesn't look good or doesn't fit. Imagine how great that would feel!

Ready to smile and chew food confidently, knowing you have your full set of teeth back?

Benefits of Implants

  • Prevents Bone Loss: When you lose teeth, you also tend to lose bone mass in your jaw. Your jawbone needs the stimulation it gets when your teeth connect to maintain its mass. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that also replaces that jaw bone stimulation, helping to prevent bone loss.

  • Matches Your Natural Teeth: Dental implants come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. We will work with you to design implants that match the color of your surrounding teeth and fit perfectly in the gap. No one but you and your dentist will know which teeth are implants.

  • Restores Bite Force: Because dental implants are anchored into your jaw with a titanium post that replaces the tooth root, they allow you to bite with more or less the same amount of force you could use with your natural teeth. Other tooth replacement options do not restore nearly as much of your bite force because they sit on top of the gums and aren’t anchored in place.

  • Prevents Changes In the Shape Of Your Face: Your teeth help support your facial structure. When you lose teeth, you lose that support, which eventually causes your face to change shape, making you appear older. Dental implants provide similar support for your face as your natural teeth, preventing it from changing shape.

  • Enables Natural Speech: Some tooth replacement options, like dentures, can impact your ability to pronounce words correctly. Missing teeth can also alter your speech. Because dental implants feel and function just like natural teeth, they enable you to speak easily and naturally.

  • No Embarrassing Slippage: Patients with dentures sometimes feel self-conscious about speaking, laughing, or eating in public, as dentures can visibly shift or slip inside your mouth. Dental implants are firmly anchored in place and will never embarrass you.

  • Supports Adjacent Teeth: A gap in your mouth caused by a missing tooth can cause the teeth on either side of the gap to shift positions, leading to misalignment. Dental implants fill the gap, allowing you to maintain a straight, even smile.

  • A Permanent Solution to Tooth Loss: Other tooth replacement options will need to be repaired or replaced periodically, but dental implants are designed to last for the rest of your life. If you’re in need of a tooth replacement option, you should definitely consider dental implants. To find out if you’re a good candidate for dental implants, schedule a consultation.

What Can You Expect?

Dental implant placement usually involves the following steps:

  • Initial consultation: We will thoroughly examine your mouth, including taking X-rays or 3D images, discuss the various implant options and develop a plan for your implant surgery.

  • Dental implant placement: At your next scheduled appointment, we will place the dental implant in your jawbone where your tooth is missing.

  • Osseointegration: As you heal, your implant and jawbone will grow together in a process called osseointegration, forming a strong, long-lasting foundation for your replacement teeth.

  • Abutment placement: Once your implant bonds with your jawbone, a small connector – called an abutment – is placed on the dental implant just above the gumline.

  • Custom-make and attach new teeth: After your gums heal, we will make impressions of your mouth and remaining teeth to custom-make your artificial teeth. These teeth – which can be an individual crown, implant-supported bridge or dentures containing multiple replacement teeth – will be attached to the abutment. Although they don’t decay, your new teeth will need the same routine care, checkups and cleanings as your natural teeth.

Which Implants Are Right For You?

Image

Replace A Single Tooth

If you are missing a single tooth, a single tooth implant is a perfect solution to replace both the lost natural tooth and its root. Single tooth implants prevent the opposing tooth from extruding, and it prevents tooth shifting.

Image

Replace Multiple Teeth

If you are missing more than one teeth, multiple teeth implants are the perfect solution for you. This permanently replaces multiple missing teeth, restores your healthy bite, and prevents jawbone atrophy..

Image

All On 4 Dental Implants

If you are missing a lot of teeth, you don’t need a dental implant for every missing tooth. Instead, you can choose Full Arch dental implants, where you'll only need 4 implants placed with precision per arch to optimize your anatomical bone structure and your cosmetic restorations.

Implant Supported Dentures

If you have several missing teeth, your dentist may recommend implant-supported dentures. Unlike conventional dentures that rest on top of your gums, implant-supported dentures are anchored to your jawbone so they won’t slip. Many of our patients appreciate being able to eat, talk, and smile with confidence.

Other alternative options may also be available to you.
